Curl up fireside by your concrete hearth.
A custom concrete hearth that extends in front of the fireplace can be incorporated in a variety of ways into your fireplace design. Our concrete hearths are made at 1” material thickness and can be shaped into a single element up to 143” long. Concrete, like other stone or brick material, is non-combustible and makes an excellent choice for your wood stove or wood-burning fireplace. Your hearth can be flush-in-floor, raised or cantilevered.
Flush-in-floor custom concrete hearths
The custom concrete hearth or slab sits directly on the floor at 1” thick. Wood or other flooring is typically installed at 3/4” height, so the hearth sits slightly proud, but it will have a nice transition with the floor. Due to the hand made nature of concrete, the slab is sometimes not perfectly flat, and comes with 1/8″ radius softened edges, meaning that we have to account for these potential discrepancies during installation. The resulting slight lip on the concrete hearth does not present issues in a walk through area.
Raised concrete hearths
A raised concrete hearth is made at 1” material thickness and moulded into a single L-shape element, including the front and sides, and sits on a prepared base or frame. The base can be wood blocking or steel, covered in 1/2” plywood. The base should be stable and robust. A raised concrete hearth can double as a concrete bench or seating area. It can also be installed with a reveal at the floor for a cantilevered effect.
Cantilevered custom concrete hearths
A cantilevered concrete hearth is designed by installing hidden in-wall steel supports. The supports are structured to bear the weight of the concrete to create a floating appearance. The space underneath the hearth is open and can be utilized for wood storage or in various other ways.
