When Less Becomes More

A clever fireplace redesign transforms a compact living room into a bright, welcoming focal point without sacrificing space.

Bathed in soft natural light, this living room proves

The homeowner envisioned a symmetrical fireplace with a wooden mantel as the room’s anchor, creating a cozy focal point without overwhelming the space.

From a head-on perspective, the fireplace reads as a bold, sculptural statement, complete with an electric insert framed by clean, understated lines.

But the room had a challenge:

tall windows on either side of the fireplace wall.

While traditional concrete returns would have given the feature more depth, they would also have eaten into the floor plan, stealing precious inches from the seating area and creating awkward gaps.

The solution was refreshingly simple:

a flat façade.

By skipping the returns, the fireplace maintains its strong presence while allowing the rest of the room to breathe. Horizontal panelling stretches the eye across the wall, visually widening the space and showcasing the texture without distracting seams.

The result is a room that feels airy yet grounded, elegant yet inviting.

There’s space for a beloved record player, comfortable seating for the whole family, and plenty of natural light to wash over every detail.

It’s proof that, in the right hands, even the coziest spaces can strike the perfect balance between beauty and function.
