Symmetry, Light & Concrete
Expansive glazing and understated concrete detailing create a tranquil focal point within this light-filled family home.
A family room should be a place to unwind, enjoy company and serve as the hub of a home.
Design firm Olly + Em created this space with ample natural light, allowing it to feel connected to the outdoors.
The glazing showcases the surrounding landscape of grasses and trees, almost acting as a large-format photo frame that allows the exterior to flow seamlessly into the interior experience.
This room was intentionally designed with symmetry in mind, a prominent design principle throughout the space. The furnishings convey a coastal aesthetic with subtle French influences, creating a cozy atmosphere while nestled in the Oakville suburbs.
Supported by wood beams, linen textile accents and a muted neutral colour palette, the space feels calm and inviting. The concrete fireplace mantel is centered within the room, allowing it to act as the main feature while remaining simple in design.
Tonal variations in the concrete give it a weathered appearance, while the backsplash panel above helps build the proportion of the fireplace against the surrounding glazing.
Venturing into the primary bedroom, a white concrete bevel mantel is paired with what appears to be white oak panelling and flooring, off-white curtains, and a blue-and-white carpet.
Concrete is incredibly versatile. Its traditional association with grey tones and an industrial feel has evolved into a wide variety of colours, tones and textures, allowing it to complement almost any interior design style.
