Long Lake Cottage

Designed for multigenerational living, powered by solar energy, and built with responsibly sourced materials.

Set on a remote peninsula in Ontario and designed to operate entirely off-grid, the cottage is shaped by its surrounding forest, bedrock, and water. The cottage spans two levels, with the primary living spaces lifted into the tree canopy to capture light, views, and a sense of immersion in nature. Accessed by a bridge, the upper level is fully accessible, ensuring every generation can experience the home. Large windows surround the living areas, leading to spacious outdoor spaces for evening entertainment and family gatherings.

At the heart of the home, communal spaces are anchored by natural materials and thoughtful detailing. A double-sided fireplace clad in raw concrete panels seamlessly blends the indoors and outdoors, offering a connection and relaxation for all seasons.

“We designed the cottage with the living spaces upstairs and bedrooms below to
preserve the natural contours of the site and ensure accessibility for the entire family,”

– Principal Heather Dubbeldam.

Surrounding wood finishes like oak floors, hemlock ceilings, and custom millwork soften the space and create a tactile contrast to the concrete’s solidity. Together, these elements create a calm, organic interior designed for gathering and making memories.

Private spaces are tucked into the lower level, where bedrooms open directly to the forest floor. The primary suite opens westward toward the lake and features an outdoor shower, a nod to the owners’ love of camping and outdoor life. Material continuity plays a defining role throughout the project.

Weathered wood cladding allows the exterior to recede into the forest, while interior finishes extend seamlessly to covered decks and outdoor rooms. The result is a cottage that feels cohesive, grounded, and deeply connected to its environment.
