Board-Formed Concrete Feature Wall

Anthony Concrete Design was commissioned to install an eye-catching, board-formed concrete feature wall for a modern, new build house in Toronto. The specifications were straightforward; the client wanted to add a real ‘wow factor’ to many aspects of the home – something that not only perfectly complemented the contemporary nature of the house, but also mixed in some aspects of traditional design. Additionally, the client wanted to maintain a minimalist feel, and yet also bring a touch of warmth and character. Board-formed concrete tiles were the perfect solution.

Board-Formed Concrete Suitable for Interior or Exterior Use

Concrete is being used more and more in modern design; the high durability of concrete is a big advantage for using it in numerous applications, such as interior and exterior walls, fireplace surrounds, and wall cladding. Drawing on the traditional idea of board-formed concrete, which creates a classic wood grain texture on the surface of the concrete, the natural softness and warmth of the concrete was brought out.

In this instance, the strategically-placed spotlights, situated along the base of the new wall feature, served to highlight the wood grain pattern and to show off the unique concrete texture. This touch of illumination helped to add an extra layer of warmth & style to the concrete, enabling it to perfectly complement the numerous design features that had been used to decorate the stairway in the home, including the deep red wood steps, the glass paneling, and the silver-finished accents.

Thin Concrete Panels with Wood Grain Texture

A primary concern when installing this concrete wall feature was to ensure that the modern, minimalist look of the home was retained. This was achieved through the use of fibre-reinforced high-performance concrete, enabling fabrication at just a ⅝ inch thickness. Pouring thin concrete panels reduces the weight of concrete significantly and provides excellent flexibility to install board-formed concrete tiles in all areas of the home, where cast-in- place concrete would be impossible.

Our board-formed concrete panels are made to measure; we offer offer custom sizes according to client specifications. However, typical sizes of the concrete panels would be around 96 x 8 inches or 72 x 6 inches, reflecting the sizes of the wood forms that would have been used in the past to create the wood grain impressions in the concrete.

For this Toronto project, we used concrete board-formed panels that were 96 x 8 inches, in several concrete colours (available in smoke, ash, and charcoal) to successfully match the hardwood flooring for a streamlined look and finish.
